The Cape side needs at least five points from their final home clash in the European tournament to stay in the running to make the playoffs of this season's competition.

The DHL Stadium in Cape Town is set for a riveting encounter this Saturday as the Stormers prepare to host the Sale Sharks in a crucial round of the Champions Cup.

After navigating the competitive waters of last season’s so-called “Group of Death”, the Cape outfit finds themselves in a precarious situation this campaign, needing a victory worth five points to bolster their dwindling playoff aspirations.

Having succumbed to defeats in their first two matches of this elite European club competition - falling to French heavyweights Toulon in Gqeberha and then missing out to Harlequins at Twickenham Stoop - Saturday’s clash marks a definitive make-or-break moment for the Stormers.

That disappointing defeat against Toulon compounded the pressure, as home victories in the Champions Cup are essential for progression. Now, facing the English side at their fortress, the Stormers must rise to the occasion.

Director of Rugby John Dobson has made it clear that a strong side will be fielded, as any further slip-up could force the team to reassess their strategy ahead of next week’s encounter with Racing 92.

A weakened lineup in France could lead to a demoralising exit from the competition and a winless run in Europe - a scenario no one associated with the inaugural URC champions wishes to contemplate.

The Stormers are buoyed by a solid run at their home ground, having negotiated their last two derby matches in the URC with style.

The encouraging momentum will play a pivotal role as they look to replicate their past performance against the Sale Sharks, where they emerged victorious with a closely contested 31-24 win.

This weekend’s match takes on added significance with the presence of familiar faces on the opposition side. Former Stormers, including Springbok utility back Robert du Preez and his brothers, Jean-Luc and Dan du Preez, will don the colours of Sale.

Additionally, Ernst van Rhyn, another former Stormer, could also return to the field against his ex-teammates, making the encounter a personal battle as well as a key fixture in the competition.

The Stormers know that victory against the Sharks is paramount. A win not only keeps their Champions Cup hopes alive but could also inject much-needed confidence into their ongoing season.

If Dobson's squad can stack up 10 points from this and their remaining clash, they might just defy the odds in this daunting "Group of Death".
