REFERRING to a Sunday Tribune article, where it was mentioned that the deputy mayor is driving around suburbs to check the state of service delivery. According to the article, he WhatsApps the head of that department immediately if there are service delivery issues like bin bags not collected or street lights not working. He also requested these issues to be addressed urgently or “heads will roll”. This is the calibre of person eThekwini needs.
But in doing so, he is getting resistance from these very lazy and incompetent officials that are used to sitting at their desk and receiving a fat salary at the end of month. These lazy officials want the deputy mayor to follow the same process they follow so that there is no accountability and no time frame.
He is bypassing all these processes (probably designed by these useless officials) to fast-track service delivery in eThekwini. My advice to the deputy mayor is to fire all these officials who don’t comply to your request because you are their employer and we, the ratepayers, are your employer by voting you into office to ensure efficient service delivery, good governance, reduce fraud and corruption and dismiss lazy incompetent officials.
Also, we as ratepayers demand to see the performance contracts of each head of department and how are they achieving these targets because in reality, there is no way that they are achieving their targets but they still get paid bonuses and receive incentives. Also, if a skills and lifestyle audit is done on eThekwini staff, I think 60% of these officials would not be compliant. This must come to an end if Durban is to become a functional municipality.
It is time for action and no more politics as per the deputy mayor. We, as ratepayers are fully behind the deputy mayor to make Durban/ eThekwini great again.
