OPINION - During the last several years, I have noticed that the current generation of young people are finding it difficult to cope with life and its challenges.

I feel sorry for them.

They are likely to have the best qualifications that any generation has ever obtained, they can access information instantly due to their skills with the use of technology and love for it, and they have good lifestyles, thanks to their parents’ hard work.

But in spite of these privileges, they seem to display a personality that is sensitive and high in emotion, and they are materialistic, but muted in life skills and empathy.

Why are children becoming monstrous brats?

Is it a lack of quality education? Or being spoilt from the time they are born? Or parents delaying having children due to careers and are much older these days. Or there is a greater sense of guilt among parents because both work, and then over-compensate and find it difficult to impose discipline.

Walk into any bookshop and see the broad selection of parenting skills books by so-called experts. With the wide selection of books available, parents are more confused now than before.

I believe we need to go back to the good old-fashioned style of parenting - set boundaries and teach values and morals, live simply, and pray and eat together.
