London - It’s not just tired office workers who can’t function without a cup of coffee. Our lawns, flower beds and hanging baskets are also gasping for a caffeine fix.

Environmentalists say sprinkling brewed coffee grounds around plants before watering keeps the minerals in compost fresher for longer.

It’s also environmentally friendly. Every year, 400 billion cups of coffee are drunk worldwide, while in the UK 27,680 tons of coffee waste goes to landfills.

Notcutts Garden Centres have began selling “coffee compost”. However, many horticulturists - like all coffee aficionados - advise the use of fresh grounds as old coffee turns mouldy fairly quickly.

And if you’re a real caffeine addict you’ll appreciate the bonus it brings - flowerbeds that smell like a freshly-brewed cappuccino. - Daily Mail
