Durban – Twenty Maritime students from the uMfolozi TVET College Esikhawini Campus are set to begin their practical training with the South African Navy today.
The group of 20 includes four transport and logistics students, four students from hospitality and 12 students from engineering, who are mostly women.
College acting principal, Elsie Du Toit said they hope these students will be good ambassadors of the college.
“We’re proud to be the first TVET college to have a Maritime Academy and to have embarked on a new route of training. We hope these students will be good ambassadors of the college,” she said.
One of the students, Sandile Ndlovu, said that he was ecstatic and was looking forward to receiving more practical exposure and was grateful to uMfolozi for introducing him to this field.
“Thanks to the college management and staff for their support. It is a privilege to be part of the programme. We will set a platform for upcoming students and will definitely apply what we’ve studied,” he said.
Lieutenant Mlindelwa Chiliza from the SA Navy said that the students would have to remain disciplined in the absence of their lecturers for the next 18 months.
Addressing the students he said: “We look forward to having you in our midst and hope you will come up with many innovative ideas.”
