The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health says action is being taken to restore water supply at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital, following a week-long disruption affecting the hospital and other areas in uMlazi.
The department confirmed that the water supply issue, which began on Sunday, February 2, was being tackled by the eThekwini Municipality.
However, it said the hospital has implemented contingency plans to mitigate the impact.
KZN Department of Health spokesperson Nathi Olifant stated that urgent steps have been taken to ensure patient care is not compromised.
“We are doing everything possible to minimise the impact of the water shortages. Our priority is to maintain hygiene, patient care, and the well-being of our staff,” Olifant said.
Since the disruption, the department said it has deployed water tankers to supply water daily to the hospital’s JoJo tanks and mobile storage facilities, ensuring that critical areas and staff residences continue to receive water.
Olifant acknowledged the difficulties faced by the hospital but reassured the public that authorities are working urgently to resolve the issue.
“We are in constant communication with eThekwini Municipality and all relevant stakeholders to ensure that water supply is restored as quickly as possible,” he said.
The department said in order to reduce pressure on Prince Mshiyeni Hospital, the department is coordinating with neighbouring hospitals to assist with patient care.
The hospital has also been purchasing bottled water and has received donations from non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
“We are extremely grateful for the support from various NGOs that have stepped in to assist during this crisis,” Olifant added.
Despite the challenges, the department said it would keep the public informed.
“We appreciate the patience of our communities and will continue to provide updates as the situation evolves,” Olifant said.
