Durban - A 57-year-old man who was stabbed about 11 times has been transferred from the critical care unit to a general hospital ward.
Evans Steyn was attacked on Monday when had returned to his Bayview home from working the night shift on Monday.
The suspect and Steyn lived in the same house.
According to a witness, Steyn questioned the witness as to why the suspect did not go to work.
“The suspect heard Evans.
“Evans was changing his clothing when the suspect came out of the bathroom and attacked him.
“He proceeded to get several knives and a bush knife and stabbed Evans on the chest multiple times.
“One of the stab wounds was next to his heart. Blood was all over the lounge floor.
“Evans managed to get out of the house and began to run but the suspect chased after him. Evans fell outside, and the suspect started stabbing him again.
“Neighbours came out to help. The men in the area tried to stop the suspect and hit him on the head with a stone.
“That’s when the stabbing stopped. Justice must be served, and the suspect must be put behind bars for what he did.
“This is not the first time the suspect has attacked Evans.
“He has injured him many times and yet he takes care of him and supports him,” said the relative.
A neighbour, Patsy Chetty, said she heard noises outside and went to investigate.
“When I looked outside, I saw Evans lying on the ground. The stab wound next to his heart was bleeding profusely and I used a cloth to try to stop the bleeding.
“There was blood everywhere. I kept screaming because the blood was just gushing out and there was nothing I could do. The suspect just wouldn’t stop. I tried to pick him up and push him so he could run away,” said the witness.
Another witness, Faith Ramnarain, said she had gone along with the victim to the hospital for urgent treatment.
“He was bleeding so much. The stabbing was very bad. I went with him to RK Khan Hospital and he was in a bad condition. He received stitches and he was taken away for medical attention. He is a good man, very pleasant and always checks up on us,” said the witness.
The 24- year-old suspect was expected to appear at the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court today.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala, confirmed the incident and the arrest of a 24-year-old man.
