A Phoenix father, who was reported missing two days ago, does not recall what occurred on the day of his disappearance, except waking up on the beach on Thursday afternoon.

Avishak Dhurgaduth, 40, was reported missing after he was last seen leaving his home in Hammerwood Road in Woodview on Wednesday morning. A few hours later, his vehicle, a Toyota Hilux, was found at Umdloti Beach.

His wallet, cellphone and the vehicle key were still inside.

Dhurgaduth was found yesterday afternoon.

Speaking to the POST, Dhurgaduth, a business owner, said he last recalled jumping out of his vehicle.

“It was like any other morning. I had my tea and went to pick up my workers from Parkgate. I brought them back to my home to complete some work and returned to my parents' home in Parkgate.

“I went back to my home, but I had a client to see in uMhlanga, so I left again. After the meeting, I decided to stop at the beach to clear my mind as I had a lot going on. I think, for many people, sitting by the beach is quite therapeutic. I wanted to plan my day and then continue with my work.

“The only thing I can remember is jumping out of my vehicle, and waking up on the beach with the sun striking on my face. When I looked around me, I saw a lighthouse and I realised where I was. I was in uMhlanga,” he said.

The father of two said he decided to walk back to Umdloti Beach.

“All I wanted to do was get back to my vehicle, so I started walking. As I got closer, I saw my parents' vehicle. But, I was very thirsty so I went into the petrol station’s convenience store and bought water. I had a few rand in my pocket. I then went up to my parents' vehicle, jumped in the back seat and broke down. My parents, who were inside the car, just started crying when they saw me.

“Everyone has been asking me what happened, but I can’t remember anything. However, I have had several blackouts before; at home and on two occasions while driving. I was previously diagnosed with syncope and this could have been what happened, but I am not sure how I ended up so far from my vehicle."

Syncope, also known as fainting, is a temporary loss of consciousness.

Dhurgaduth said while he was grateful to everyone who helped to search for him, he felt devastated and troubled by comments being made on social media.

“It is quite upsetting that people are speculating about what happened. One shouldn't be so quick to judge without knowing the facts. I am also still confused and concerned about what happened to me. It was not something I intended to do purposely. But to everyone who shared the posts and searched for me, I appreciate your efforts,” he said.
