Since the reopening of borders after the Covid-19 pandemic, South Africans are rekindling their love for travel, but with a fresh perspective.
Insights from KLA, a consumer insights agency, reveal how South Africans are adapting their travel preferences in this new era.
Shifting priorities in travel
The pandemic reshaped how people travel, with South Africans now focusing on meaningful experiences, value for money, and integrating technology into their plans.
Over 80% believe that travel is key to understanding a country, driving a deeper connection to destinations.
Key factors influencing travel choices include affordability (54%), favourable climates (54%), and accessible transport options (51%). Accommodation preferences have also evolved, with cleanliness (74%), friendly staff (62%), and cost (51%) topping the list.

Exploring heritage
“Heritage holidays” have gained popularity, with 75% of South Africans either planning or having already taken a trip focused on their ancestry and cultural roots. These journeys reflect a growing desire for personal and meaningful travel experiences.
A rise in domestic tourism
The phrase “local is lekker” has never been more relevant, as domestic travel surges. In the past year, 21% of South Africans travelled locally at least three times for leisure, a notable rise from 15% in 2022.
International travel, on the other hand, remains less frequent, with only 14% reporting three or more trips abroad in the same period.
Technology transforming travel
Technology is playing a crucial role, with 83% of South Africans using their phones to plan and book trips. Pre-organised activities are increasingly popular, appealing to 62% of travellers, while nearly half (48%) still seek off-the-beaten-track adventures.
Budget-friendly options
Affordability remains a priority, as 43% of travellers wait for last-minute deals to save money. Payment methods are evolving too, with cash (40%) still the most common for international trips, followed by credit cards (34%) and online solutions (28%).
Innovative options like Travelstart’s “Book Now, Pay Later” system offer added financial flexibility.
Brave new adventures
South Africans are embracing a spirit of adventure, with 85% feeling braver on holiday and open to trying new activities and stepping outside their comfort zones.
This reflects a shift towards not just seeing the world but experiencing it fully.
