If you’re planning a trip overseas, be prepared to spend more when visiting several global cities this year.

Travel trends for 2025 pinpoint a significant rise in interest in cities such as Rome, Tokyo and New York City among others, according to a recent study by DIPNDIVE.

The findings, which focus on search volumes related to travel keywords from the past two years, shed light on shifting travel preferences and signal higher costs for eager tourists.

But be warned though: rising demand is likely to see travel costs rising in these popular destinations.

Leading the charge is Rome, a city steeped in history and culture, which has seen a remarkable 38.26% spike in search interest.

The Italian capital already boasts a visitor base of 10.1 million.

The city’s growing popularity show no signs of slowing as it positions itself as a key destination for 2025, likely driving up travel costs.

TIP: This year is also significant for the city as it is the Jubilee 2025 - a special holy year in Rome and the Vatican City, and across Italy, which began at Christmas 2024 and will end at Epiphany 2026.

In second place, Tokyo has captured attention with a notable 29.98% increase in interest.

Known for its unique blend of tradition and futurism, this bustling metropolis attracted 494.2 million visitors last year and has maintained high monthly search volumes, showcasing its status as a major global hotspot.

TIP: The best times to visit Japan? The best weather is in the spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) seasons, with May and October-November being the optimal months to balance good weather, fewer crowds and lower prices.

New York City, the cultural heart of the United States, ranks third with a 22.03% rise in curiosity.

With 7.13 million travel searches fuelling its appeal, the city welcomed 62.2 million visitors last year, indicating a continued surge in demand.

Such popularity is expected to correspond with increased prices for accommodation and attractions.

Osaka in Japan as well and Paris, France follow closely behind.

Osaka is poised for a 21.46% growth, reflecting an upward trend in online searches that jumped to nearly 1.96 million in 2024. The city saw 15.6 million visitors previously.

It is known for its delicious street food, the famous Osaka Castle and for thrilling Universal Studios Japan, which attracts tourists from all over Asia.

Meanwhile, Paris, the romance capital of the world, is not far behind with a projected 20.34% growth, drawing on its perennial charm which attracted 30 million tourists last year.

Other cities making the list include:

  • Munich, Germany, which experienced nearly a 20% increase in interest.
  • Los Angeles, USA, witnessing a 14.40% growth, firmly establishing both as desirable travel locales.
  • Berlin, Germany,
  • Seoul in South Korea.
  • London, UK.

London, in particular, remains the most visited city in Europe, underscoring its continued allure to global travellers.

DIPNDIVE warns that higher prices for accommodations, flights and activities can catch travellers off guard, “so planning ahead and booking early can make a big difference”.

“It’s also a good idea to consider travelling during less busy times or exploring nearby areas to stretch your budget while still having a memorable trip.”
