Amid rising syndicate threats, the Transport Portfolio Committee calls for urgent protective measures to safeguard Transnet staff.

The Portfolio Committee on Transport has condemned attacks on and threats against Transnet staff by deadly syndicates.
The committee had been conducting oversight visits to various entities, including the SA National Roads Agency’s projects on the Wild Coast and port operations at Richard’s Bay and Durban.
In a statement, the committee said it was informed of Transnet's challenges with syndicates colluding with suppliers and accepting payments.
"Transnet said many of those involved were on suspension or have been dismissed but the threats have continued. The affected areas include procurement, fuel theft and information systems," the committee stated.
Committee Chairperson Donald Selamolela stated that this level of risk is unacceptable, emphasising the need for Transnet to implement all necessary measures to protect its workforce.
"We are really proud to find an entity on the upward trajectory, that is working with local suppliers and contributing to the broader transformational goals of government. These challenges are not insurmountable and the entity should continue to relentlessly work to resolve them," he said.
The committee was also told that when third-party contracts expire, many suppliers choose to turn to the courts for litigation so they can continue providing Transnet with the service and own the state-owned entity's data.
Selamolela added that Transnet had outsourced most of its important functions including its IT systems, contributing to the company's operational awareness.
He added that the selfish act of vandalism against Transnet infrastructure hinders operations for both Transnet and the country's regional development.
"Time is now to decisively deal with the vandalism,"Selamolela said.
The committee lauded the courage of individuals who continue to serve Transnet despite facing life-threatening circumstances.
