The Port of Durban has marked a significant milestone in its operational history, successfully handling the MSC Rifaya, a colossal vessel measuring 399.99 meters—a record for the largest container ship to ever dock at this pivotal maritime hub.
This remarkable event, prompted by an unscheduled call for emergency repairs, underscores the port's robust infrastructure and capacity to accommodate some of the world's largest seafaring vessels.
With an impressive capacity of 19,437 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), the arrival of the MSC Rifaya was no simple feat. It required a highly coordinated four-tug operation, demonstrating the exceptional nautical capabilities of the Port of Durban.
The intricate manoeuvring involved in bringing this massive ship to shore showcased the astute planning and execution by the port's marine team, further establishing Durban’s reputation on the global maritime stage.
