Tucked into the stunning landscapes of Sun City, Lefika Villas delights with its sleek modern design, marrying cultural heritage with creature comforts that appeal to all one's senses.

"Lefika," meaning "stone" in Setswana pays tribute to the rich history and rocky beauty of the surrounding Pilanesberg area.

My family and I took a three-hour road trip to reach this stunning destination that is nestled in the North West province.

I was looking forward to this luxury self-catering accommodation as a real treat away from the bustle of Johannesburg, with all its stresses, and Lefika Villas did not disappoint.

On arrival the reception was welcoming. For the entire trip the level of service was exceptional with staff being friendly and helpful.

At Lefika Villas, each villa has been carefully positioned among natural rock formations and trees, offering privacy and incredible views, which are spectacular. Nestled in the hilly surrounds is the Lost City and views of the Palace, which adds a magic touch and a feeling of adventure.

The development includes spacious three- and four-bedroom villas.

Inside, you’ll find a warm blend of natural materials - think stone finishes, dark wood accents, and handcrafted details. Local artworks and soft, earthy tones and beaded light fittings give the spaces a distinct South African feel. There was an excitement in being in this open-planned opulence.

But what makes it special is the little touches of luxury. From a signature wall with aloe wallpaper, to a wood-burning fireplace, to the outside wine fridge - it is the attention to detail that really makes a difference.

And not to be overlooked was a bathroom with a bath so big who needs a pool.

The villa we stayed in provided a fully equipped kitchen and top of the range appliances. It had mod cons such as Wi-Fi and a flat TV screen for the whole family to unwind to and get quality downtime.

Lefika Villas outdoor space was made for making memories. One would not be South African without enjoying a good braai with family and friends.

While adults get well-deserved time to relax, the kids are well entertained.

My children are teenagers and enjoyed access to the Valley of the Waves, a thrilling water park featuring a massive wave pool, water slides, and beach-style fun. Just a reminder, suntan lotion is a must. They also got to play games at The Magic Company with laser tag and ten pin bowling. There is just so much for them to do. One is spoiled for choice. Segway tours are also on offer for the more daring.

Sun City opened in 1979, developed by hotel magnate Sol Kerzner. Sun City's roots lie in bypassing apartheid's gambling laws in the 80s. But decades later it offers so much more. It has become a fantastic place for families to get away and enjoy themselves.

Lefika Villas* is part of the Sun Vacation Club at Sun City. The Sun Vacation Club offers luxury, self-catering apartments. Members purchase holiday weeks that can be used for five or 10 years, gaining exclusive benefits like free entry to the resort and the Valley of Waves, discounts, and access to Sun City's many activities and entertainment options.

Another Sun Vacation offering is The Reserve. It offers fully equipped two- to three-bedroom duplex villas.

The Reserve gives a nod wildlife as it is surrounded by bushveld with different areas of these duplex villass being named after cheetahs, elephants and buffalos, among other animals. The Reserve has recently also undergone a R210 million refurbishment of all its villas. The furnishings of the villas are tastefully done with wildlife paintings and geometric prints that add a signature touch.

Also part of the Sun Vacation Club is the Aviary, which got its name due to the roads in this area being named after birds. These free-standing villas are very private. It is due for refurbishment in 2028/9.

Lefika Villas, The Reserve and the Aviary are three different offerings with a different price tag that fit into various budgets.

For example, if  one purchases a 10-year membership at The Reserve of a two-bedroom villa for a flexi weekend it would cost R43 520. At the Aviary the flexi weekend would cost R61 200. At Lefika Villas a three-bedroom villa flexi weekend would cost R94 050.

Whatever the budget, one thing is guaranteed, with thoughtful touches, exceptional service, and access to unforgettable experiences, Sun City with Lefika Villas isn’t just a getaway - it’s a destination you’ll want to return to, time and time again.
