The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has explained why some individuals, despite being approved to receive the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, sometimes do not get paid.
The SRD grant, established in 2020 as a temporary measure to provide financial support during times of economic hardship, continues to serve as a vital lifeline for unemployed and vulnerable South Africans aged 18 to 59.
According to reports, SASSA receives around 80,000 new SRD grant applications each month and has processed approximately 17.4 million applications since the grant’s introduction.
This ongoing demand for the grant coincides with rising unemployment in the country. The latest Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS) from Stats SA revealed that South Africa’s unemployment rate climbed to 33.2% in the second quarter of 2025.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, the agency explained why some grant beneficiaries may not receive their payments despite being approved.
SASSA pointed to issues such as incorrect or unverified banking details and identity verification delays.
"You may not have provided us with your correct banking details, or your banking details are waiting to be confirmed or verified, or you are on referred status," the agency said.
The agency also added that beneficiaries can update their banking details or verify their identity by visiting the SRD website.
SASSA reassured applicants that once banking details have been confirmed and verified, payments will be processed in the next payment cycle.
"Contact the call centre on 0800 601 011. This could be that the bank returned your money due to an anomaly with your account."
