Bishop Lavis crime fighters are outraged after a man was shot dead outside a school as class was in session on Tuesday morning.
The Bishop Lavis Crime Prevention Forum strongly condemned the shooting outside Greenlands Primary School, saying learners should not be subjected to such an environment.
The body of a 26-year-old man was found lying on the pavement next to the school fence.
Graham Lindhorst, spokesperson for the Bishop Lavis Crime Prevention Forum, has called on SAPS to be proactive and not reactive.
"It is not right that our learners be subjected to such a learning environment. It is unacceptable that gangsters control our communities.
"Although it was not a learner that was fatally shot, we condemn the fact that this shooting took place around the vicinity where learning is taking place.
"The State has all the capacity to deal with the situation on the Cape Flats and they are constitutionally mandated to keep our communities safe. We cannot be safe if shots go off every time and killings become the order of the day.
"So we call on SAPS to do what they are mandated to do and deal with the situation in our areas."
Police spokesperson, Joseph Swartbooi, said the motive for the shooting is believed to be gang related.
"Bishop Lavis police responded to a complaint earlier [yesterday]. Upon their arrival in Sky Road at about 9am they found the body of a man who sustained a gunshot wound.
"The victim, aged 26, was declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel. The unknown suspects fled the scene and they are yet to be arrested.
"Bishop Lavis police registered a murder for further investigation."
Police are appealing to anyone with any information to call Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
