Gun violence claims lives of two women in Cape Town communities

Police investigate two fatal shootings in Delft and Retreat, leaving communities in shock.

Three women have been shot, two of whom have been killed in less than 24 hours in two different communities.

Police were called to the first scene on Tuesday where the body of a 19-year-old woman was found near the Delft South library in Delft Main road.

Police spokesperson, Captain FC Van Wyk explained that the woman and her boyfriend were walking out a premises along the main road when gunmen opened fire.

"Delft police registered a murder case following a shooting incident on September 16, at 6.55 am at a premises in Delft Main Road, Delft South, where a 19-year-old female was shot and fatally wounded," he said.

“According to the deceased boyfriend he and his girlfriend came walking out of the yard at the above-mentioned address . When two unknown males came walking towards them from the opposite side of the road. Both had firearms and then started shooting towards them. The deceased was shot and transported privately to a nearby hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival.

 “The motive for the incident forms part of police investigations. The suspects are yet to be arrested.”

During a second incident, in Orrel Avenue Retreat, two women were attacked by gunmen who opened fire, leaving one dead on Tuesday.

Van Wyk explained what took place: “Steenberg police registered a murder and an attempted murder following a shooting incident on September 17 around 1am at a premises in Orrel Avenue, Retreat, where a 35-year-old female was shot and fatally wounded and a 39 -year-old injured. The injured victim was taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment.

 “Circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation. The motive is believed to be gang related. The suspects are yet to be arrested.
