THERE has been yet another stoning on a notorious stretch of the N2 near Cape Town International Airport, this time near-fatal.

Yesterday a motorist crashed into a barrier after being stoned.

He was taken to the Groote Schuur Hospital, according to Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Keri Davids. He has not yet been identified.

A passing motorist, Ray Wright, said he was driving from the airport just after 2pm when he saw two men on an overhead bridge holding a rock and dropping it on the freeway.

“It hit a white car and it skidded all over the road before crashing into the barrier. The car got hit quite hard by the rock,” Wright said.

“I could not see what happened to the driver but he hit so bad on the barrier I don’t think he is still alive.”

He stopped to check but a group of men emerged from bush and started attacking a delivery truck. That driver escaped unharmed.

“We were caught in the middle and it is crazy how that all happened so suddenly,” said Wright.

“There is usually a heavy police presence near the N2 but when the incident happened there were no police in sight. I tried calling the police but I didn’t get an answer.”

Wright said he was not sure whether strikers were responsible.

“Initially I thought they were protesters but it didn’t seem like they were striking. I think it was people using the strike to take advantage of the situation.”

Provincial traffic spokesperson Kenny Africa confirmed the driver of the vehicle lost control and crashed into the barrier. He said the provincial traffic centre had received reports of vehicles being stoned on the N2 but could not link this accident with stone-throwing.
