I refer to Quentin Wray's article "How many energy adverts does it take to change a lightbulb?" (Business Report, June 1).
With the shortage of capacity in electricity generation, I find it amazing that Eskom has not made use of ripple relays to control power use during peak periods. Ripple relays are gadgets installed in geysers in homes. They are used to switch the geyser on and off from a control room kilometres away.
The signal sent to activate the relay is sent along existing cables that feed electricity to customers' homes. The cost of controlling millions of geysers is small compared with building new stations.
