When markets are volatile, investors are often attracted to alternative investments in the belief that they can obtain positive returns at relatively lower levels of risk. Alternative investments include hedge funds, commodities, private equity and venture capital.
Although alternative investments can provide opportunities for long-term capital appreciation and portfolio diversification, you should thoroughly understand how these investments work before you take the plunge and invest.
At the acsis/Personal Finance Financial Planning Club's meeting next week, Francois van Wyk, the chief investment officer at Cadiz African Harvest Fund Managers, will discuss how alternative investments can form part of a well-diversified portfolio.
Van Wyk joined Cadiz in 2005. He has over 12 years' experience of investing in equities, balanced funds and alternative investments.
The presentation will be held on Tuesday, August 28, at the Belmont Square Conference Centre in Rondebosch. Contact Imtithaal on 021 670 7800 or imtithaal.philander@acsis.co.za for more information or to book.
The meeting starts at 5.30pm for 6pm and ends at 7.10pm.
The fee to attend the meeting is R100 for individuals, while members of the Financial Planning Institute pay R65, and students and pensioners are charged R60.
