Brown delivers some good news

ESKOM had carried out emergency repairs at the Majuba power station, Public Enterprises Minister Lynne Brown, said yesterday in Parliament. Majuba was now able to provide full power at the morning and evening peak times and an average of 85 percent of power during the day, Brown said. “Repairs are under way to enable Majuba to provide full power during the day as well,” she added. In November, the collapse of a coal storage silo at Majuba power station in Mpumalanga had forced Eskom to rely heavily on diesel-powered turbines to avoid power outages. The minister said Medupi’s unit 6 gas turbine had reached “a critical milestone” and was running at the optimum speed of 3 000 revolutions per minute. The government was working with Eskom, Transnet and PetroSA on a number of initiatives to increase electricity supply from gas-fired power stations and from hydro-electricity, according to the minister. – Siphamandla Goge
