Sibanye-Stillwater has appointed Chartered Accountant, Dr Lindiwe Mthimunye, as an independent non-executive director, effective immediately.
This move is anticipated to enhance the board’s expertise, particularly in financial governance and strategic leadership, areas where Dr Mthimunye has excelled throughout her career.
With over 23 years of experience across a myriad of sectors, including oil and gas, property investment and management, and investment banking, Dr Mthimunye’s credentials are impressive.
Her qualifications include being a Chartered Accountant (CA), a Master of Commerce (MCom) from the University of Cape Town, and a Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) from Geneva Business School. This diverse academic background underpins her understanding of financial discipline and governance excellence.
In addition to her role at Sibanye-Stillwater, Dr Mthimunye holds significant positions on various boards. She serves as the independent non-executive chairperson of Metrofile Holdings, beginning in 2025, and contributes as an independent non-executive director at Blue Label Telecoms since 2022, as well as a non-executive director at Sabvest Capital.
Dr Mthimunye's extensive experience in the energy sector, especially her research on ESG integration and its investment implications for South Africa’s coal industry, marks her as a forward-thinking leader. Her doctoral studies, completed in 2024, demonstrate her commitment to sustainable business practices in challenging industries.
Her
professional journey began at Rand Merchant Bank in 1999, where she specialised in structured and project finance. During her tenure, she played a pivotal role in landmark infrastructure transactions across the continent.
Notably, she was instrumental in financing the Albert Luthuli Hospital—recognised as South Africa's first provincial public-private partnership and awarded the Africa Deal of the Year by Euromoney in 2002. Her accolades include being named a top performer in structured and project finance by the Association of Black Securities and Investment Professionals (ABSIP) in the same year.
In 2006, Dr Mthimunye founded Palau Structured Solutions, focusing on infrastructure public-private partnerships as well as Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) acquisitions.
Her success continued as she took on a leadership role at Bakoro Property Group, where she managed a township retail portfolio, facilitating lucrative exits to prominent property funds. From 2013 to 2016, she served as Group chief financial officer at PetroSA, implementing strategic initiatives that encompassed cost optimisations and capital raising.
“The board is confident that Lindiwe’s appointment will bring valuable insight and strengthen Sibanye-Stillwater,” said Sibanye-Stillwater chairman, Dr Vincent Maphai.
