The National Transmission Company South Africa (NTCSA) has announced the permanent appointment of Monde Bala as CEO, effective 1 October 2025.

This decision follows Bala’s tenure as interim CEO over the past two months, a period during which he exhibited a firm grasp of the intricacies of the transmission sector.

Priscillah Mabelane, chairperson of the NTCSA board, expressed confidence in Bala’s capabilities.

“We are confident in Mr Bala’s ability to lead the NTCSA into its next chapter. He brings a wealth of experience and insight to the role, and we look forward to continuing our work with him and the executive team as we drive forward our strategic deliverables,” Mabelane said.

Bala’s experience in the power sector spans over 27 years, positioning him as a key figure to steer the NTCSA in fulfilling its mission of providing reliable, fair, and affordable access to the electricity grid and market.

His leadership is anticipated to play a pivotal role in fostering a more competitive and efficient electricity market, which will ultimately benefit all South Africans.

Under Bala’s direction, the NTCSA aims to accelerate the execution of its strategy, which includes attracting investment into the transmission grid through the Transmission Development Plan (TDP), advancing operational unbundling as per legislative requirements, and nurturing a fair and competitive electricity market.

Before his role as interim CEO, Bala served as the Group Executive for Eskom Distribution since 2019, where he held various important leadership positions throughout his career at Eskom.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Cape Town and a Master of Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand.

The NTCSA said it welcomed Bala’s arrival and anticipated his leadership will be vital in shaping the future of South Africa’s energy landscape, marking a significant step forward in the country’s journey towards sustainable energy solutions.
