South Africa's coffee addiction continues to boom despite price increases over the years with consumption of the drink proving resilient

Local coffee drinkers are increasingly opting for premium coffee products, which are proving more resilient and continuing to grow even amid a challenging economic environment.

According to insights from Eighty20, a consumer strategy firm in South Africa, ground coffee drinkers relish about 1.8 cups daily, compared to 1.7 cups consumed on average by instant coffee drinkers, with the upper echelons of the income spectrum (SEM 10 and LSM 10 consumers) exceeding two cups per day.

In a move to capitalise on the trend, Checkers Hyper has unveiled the first-ever Nespresso shop-in-shop at its Centurion Mall location in Tshwane.

The groundbreaking move within the South African grocery retail sector, the concept integrates a dedicated space for a premium coffee experience directly within a supermarket setting, catering to the needs of an ever-evolving consumer market.

With an impressive 22.7 million South Africans indulging in coffee daily, the coffee market has grown significantly, recording a remarkable 15% year-on-year growth in 2025.

Projections indicate a continued rise at an anticipated rate of close to 12% annually until 2029.

This growth can largely be attributed to younger, urban consumers increasingly opting for premium and convenient coffee formats like capsules and pods for at-home consumption.

Instant coffee reigns supreme in South Africa, with leading brand Ricoffy captivating a loyal base, outpacing the next five competitors combined, as pointed out by Andrew Fulton, Director at Eighty20.

Fulton said, “Coffee is not just a beverage; it signifies a cultural lifestyle choice that continues to thrive even in tough economic climates.”

Fulton said that in the second half of 2024, while national inflation remained below 4.5%, coffee prices surged, with instant coffee experiencing the steepest year-on-year consumer price increase of any food or beverage item in August 2024, jumping 22.3%, joining eggs as the only other category exceeding 20% inflation.

While inflation abates, prices do still rise.  The average price for 250 grams of Instant coffee over the past 3 years has shown a compound annual growth rate of nearly 13%.

The newly launched Nespresso shop-in-shop offers customers a unique opportunity to delve into the exclusive selection of coffee blends, machines, and accessories from the renowned global brand that's celebrated for its 40-year legacy.

This integration of specialist coffee expertise within a grocery environment not only enhances customer experience but also merges the thrill of discovery with everyday shopping.

In addition, coffee enthusiasts can benefit from the convenience of 60-minute delivery for Nespresso pods through Checkers Sixty60, available from select locations in Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Looking ahead, a second Nespresso shop-in-shop is set to open at Checkers Hyper Paarl Junction in the Western Cape next month, further amplifying consumer access to premium coffee experiences.

“Understanding and catering to evolving customer preferences is key to our offering,” said Willem Hunlun, Chief Operating Officer of Checkers.

“As our customers look to recreate café experiences at home, our partnership with Nespresso enables us to meet that demand by making premium coffee more accessible, discoverable, and convenient within a grocery setting.”

Highlighting the importance of accessibility, Gabriel Nobre, CEO of Nespresso South Africa, added, “Expanding accessibility is one of the key levers to unlock the full potential of the coffee capsules category. Through our partnership with Checkers, we are accelerating this ambition with a true omnichannel approach — ensuring availability both online and in select Checkers stores, bringing the Nespresso Coffee Experience directly to consumers where they are.”

This exciting collaboration between Checkers Hyper and Nespresso marks a significant milestone in the South African retail landscape, paving the way for a new era in coffee consumption that promises quality, convenience, and an enhanced shopping experience for coffee lovers across the nation.
