Woolworths Holdings Limited has increased security and vigilance across its stores nationwide following two separate incidents involving improvised explosive devices at branches in Pretoria and Bloemfontein this past week.

The retailer confirmed that devices were detonated during the early hours of Thursday and Friday morning at its Menlyn Park store in Pretoria and its Preller Square branch in Bloemfontein.

According to Woolworths, both incidents took place between 01:00 and 02:00 while the stores were closed.

The company said no injuries were reported in either incident.

“Most importantly, Woolworths is relieved to share that no one was harmed in either incident,” the retailer said in a statement.

While the Menlyn Park branch has since reopened, the Preller Square store remains closed as investigations continue.

Woolworths said some staff members had been affected by the incidents and support was being provided to employees.

“In both instances, the devices were set off between 01:00 and 02:00, when stores were closed. Some staff members have, understandably, been affected by the events and Woolworths is providing all of the necessary support to our teams,” the company said.

The South African Police Service was immediately informed following both incidents, with the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, commonly known as the Hawks, now leading the investigation.

Woolworths said thorough sweeps were conducted at both sites to ensure no additional threats were present.

“At this stage, no further information on the nature of the devices or the motive behind these attacks is available,” the company added.

As a precautionary measure, Woolworths said it had strengthened security protocols nationally and contracted specialist forensic experts to assist authorities.

Incoming Group CEO Sam Ngumeni said the company remained committed to protecting its employees, customers and operations.

“Woolworths is a proudly South African brand that stands for integrity and the courage to do the right thing. We are taking every action and doing everything in our power to protect our people and customers, who remain our first priority,” said Ngumeni.

“An attack on our business is an attack on our values, and the millions of people we serve.”

Ngumeni said the retailer would continue operating despite the incidents.

“Our business has thrived for nearly a century because our people make the decision each day to show up and excel. That won’t change. Our doors will stay open, and our values will continue to be evident in every experience, and every product, as they have always done,” he said.
