Durban - A man who had come to visit his relative was shot in an attempted hijacking in Phoenix, north of Durban on Sunday night. 

Colonel Thembeka Mbele, a KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, said that  that just after 7:45 pm, a 43-year-old man was visiting a friend who lived on Rockford Drive when he was approached by two armed men. 

Mbele said the men demanded his car keys. 

"The victim got out of the vehicle and managed to throw his car keys onto the other side of the road. The men began shooting. The victim was wounded on his left leg. The men fled the scene in their gateway vehicle,"Mbele said. 

The victim was rushed to the Mahatma Gandhi Hospital 

Charges of attempted carjacking and attempted murder were opened at Phoenix police station for investigation.

It is believed that the victim could have been selling carpets and linen in the community when he was confronted by the robbers. 

According to the KZN Intel and traffic  WhatsApp group the men had picked up the empty shells when they were leaving.
