Lots of VIPs not many tourists (in Durban). Sewerage beaches, our main drawcard. CBD in a mess. We are no longer a premier tourist destination. Hopefully the VIPs will address this. Not likely though. | Ian Shaw

Well, 49 Afrikaners have entered the United States as ‘refugees’ under Trumps misguided belief that they have been racially discriminated against. I guess the temptation of receiving housing, furnishing and groceries and the opportunity to live in a first world country were just too great to resist. One wonders how they will be received and if and when they will regret such a move. However, despite the hardships of living in South Africa, who in their right mind would want to live in the states under the authoritarian leadership of Donald Trump. | Bob Malvern

Welcome to Durban the city of potholes. One can have a choice of round/square/deep/not-so deep. We’re so proud of them that we promote them nationally. | Joe Soap

So much is being said about the mayor (Cyril Xaba) being part of the people because he watched the soccer game at Albert park. Mayor, did you come with security? Do you have a Jojo tank in your home? Do you have a generator? Were you given a car for free? Petrol for free? Guess you’re not really one of the people now are you? | Daily News reader

Article ‘Transport deputy minister prioritises pedestrian road safety’ in Daily News print edition dated 13 May 2025 p 6:Comment as invited: I agree that action needs to be taken to reduce pedestrian deaths. I suggest that a lower night-time speed limit be introduced. The aim must be that every driver can stop within the distance he is able to see ahead. | Daily News reader

Mr President (Cyril Ramaphosa) when they were here (Afrikaners), you didn’t care so why now?

If they’re happy and settled in the US, let them be. South Africa has far more urgent problems that need your leadership.

• Potholes turning our roads into obstacle courses;
• Unreliable electricity disrupting lives and businesses;
• Water shortages in too many communities;
• A collapsing healthcare system where clinics lack staff, medicine, and dignity
• Non collection of refuse creating health hazards;
• Widespread theft of public funds with no consequences; and
• A growing unemployment crisis with too few job opportunities for our people.

Mr President, fix our house first. We need solutions, not overseas meetings that won’t put food on our tables. | Daily News reader
