Tighter rules on internet gambling are a safe bet

The department of trade and industry (dti) has proposed that the parliamentary committee on trade and industry should accept amendments to the Gambling Act to restrict or ban online gambling.

It may also ban person-to-person gambling - where two individuals, using the services of a betting parlour, bet on a soccer team to win a particular match - once the research and policy process of the act's implementation were completed.

Fungai Sibanda, the dti's head of policy and legislation, said the ban against advertising internet gambling should be extended to foreign service providers.

The committee was told that amendments to the bill would tighten up the obligation of an internet gambling service provider to verify age. - Ronnie Morris
