Meet Dorothy Pole, a serial entrepreneur from Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria.

Pole, a mother of three, has always wanted to be her own boss. She started off as a hawker selling clothes in her community.

Two years ago she ventured into the ice cream market, buying stock from a Nestlé distributor and employing 10 vendors to sell for her company, Katlego Ice Cream.

She provided the vendors with bicycles and cooler boxes, while paying them a commission.

A year into the business she decided to broaden her business interests and went to a Umsobomvu Youth Fund office in Pretoria.

"I was pushy and didn't mind spending as much as R50 a day on transport, because I was determined and willing."

Umsobomvu advised her to apply for the Ice Cream Magic on Wheels programme - an entrepreneurial skills development scheme run by the youth fund and Nestlé Ice Cream South Africa.

She says the course opened doors for her.

Armed with her newly acquired knowledge of drafting a business plan, basic accounting and bookkeeping, she qualified for a R20 000 loan from Umsobomvu.

Pole says she used this loan to open another branch in Lefatlheng, where she employs another 10 vendors.

Part of the money went to hiring an additional 10 vendors for her business in Hammanskraal and buying more stock, which she now sources directly from Nestlé.

She would not reveal how much profit she was making, but said she was doing well and could now afford to channel R4 000 a week to purchasing new stock.

Her company suffered a temporary setback when she fell ill last August and could not be involved in the day-to-day managing of the business.

This even affected her ability to service her Umsobomvu loan. The business picked up again in October.

Pole's aspiration is to open three new distribution centres around Hammanskraal.

But before she can do this, she has to ensure that the existing centres are financially stable.
