ESKOM has warned the country of possible power cuts today as the electricity grid remains severely constrained. The power utility said it would implement Stage 2 load shedding, or a cut of up to 2 000MW, due to further shortages of generation capacity as additional units had to be taken out of service for unplanned maintenance caused by technical faults. This week Eskom implemented Stage 3 of load shedding to cut up to 4 000MW of power to prevent a total collapse of the grid. “The electricity supply system remains very vulnerable for the rest of the week as the cold weather sets in, with showers forecast for the weekend,” Eskom said. – Staff Reporter
