Cosatu defers amendments

Midrand - Amendments to the Cosatu constitution have now been deferred to its central executive committee meeting.

This comes after the federation decided it could not finish all items on its agenda before closing the Cosatu congress on Thursday.

The decision was met with mixed reactions, with Cosatu’s national leaders also attempting to defer the appeals to its expulsion from metalworkers union, Numsa, and general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi, to the CEC as well.

Among the most vociferous opposition to the latter decision was the Food and Allied Workers Union and the commercial and catering union, Saccawu,.

Both said the decisions should not be made by presidents and general secretaries, but unions’ rank and file should also have a say.

Meanwhile, it appears unlikely congress will end by president S’dumo Dlamini’s hope of 2:30pm, as unions continue to debate resolutions.
