Johannesburg - Decent work for all and finding solutions to issues affecting the fiscus will be some of the burning issues discussed at trade union federation Fedusa’s 6th two-day national congress, says Fedusa general secretary Dennis George.
George told Independent Media that what was preventing many people from decent employment was poor leadership and corruption, amongst other factors.
“There is a problem in South Africa that is preventing people from decent work. Such as issues where we have state capture, corruption and unethical leadership in the high echelons. We also have situations where CEO salaries are high and the people at the bottom must only have crumbs of what’s left on the table,” said George at Fedusa’s congress in Johannesburg on Thursday.
The congress would also provide an opportunity for the government and labour to air out plans to deal with state capture and corruption, said George.
Another hot topic is the issue of base erosion and profit shifting by multi-national companies, where companies find loopholes in tax laws in order to decrease their tax bills, which had adverse effects on the government’s tax revenue collection.
Fedusa, which has 20 affiliated trade unions, will also elect its top leadership during the congress as its president, Koos Bezuidenhout, steps down.
It's the second-biggest federation in the country.
Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the congress, along with Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas and Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant.
