As fuel prices continue their relentless ascent, South Africans are finding themselves at a crossroads regarding vehicle ownership.
The latest fuel hike has prompted consumers to shift their focus from the initial purchase price of vehicles to the ever-increasing costs associated with fuel consumption and overall ownership.
This shift is underscored by a growing awareness of fuel efficiency as a critical factor in car-buying decisions.
Antoine Caradonna, managing director of VehicleSA, noted the palpable shift in consumer mindset.
"While electric vehicles are capturing interest, they remain financially out of reach for many. Buyers are now asking a more practical question: can I afford to drive this car every day?"
With everyday expenses weighing heavily on household budgets, the need for economical driving has never been more pronounced.
In response to this growing concern, VehicleSA has launched an innovative monthly fuel cost calculator, intended to assist consumers in making informed decisions.
Unlike traditional comparison tools that solely rely on theoretical fuel consumption figures, this new calculator takes into account real-time fuel prices and individual driving habits.
Consumers can plug in their desired mileage, revealing personalised estimates that allow them to consider fuel expenditure alongside other essential ownership costs, such as repayments and insurance.
This holistic approach reinforces the importance of understanding the true cost of vehicle ownership.
VehicleSA has also unveiled a comprehensive ranking system highlighting the "cheapest cars to run" across key vehicle segments, all based on an average monthly driving distance of 1,250 km at current fuel prices.
The data compellingly demonstrates variations in fuel costs even among similar models.
For instance, in the hatchback category, fuel expenses for the popular Toyota Vitz and Suzuki Celerio amount to approximately R1,398 monthly.
In striking contrast, the less efficient Renault Kwid can escalate to R1,631 monthly, a difference that can accumulate to more than R7,000 in savings annually for those who opt for the more fuel-efficient options.
A similar pattern emerges in the crossover segment.
The Renault Kiger stands out as one of the most affordable options to run, averaging around R1,664 monthly in fuel costs.
Conversely, larger or less efficient models can inflate fuel bills by over R300 per month.
Caradonna added, “Even within the same brand, moving up a model range can significantly increase your fuel spend.”
