Tributes are pouring in across social media following the passing of beloved actress Nandi Nyembe, who became a household name through her iconic roles in television dramas like Yizo Yizo and Zone 14.
The veteran actress’s death was confirmed by her family in a joint statement with the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture on Saturday.
Nyembe, aged 75, leaves behind a legacy of unforgettable performances spanning more than five decades.
"Her journey broke barriers. She inspired young actors in villages and townships to dream beyond their circumstances, showing them that greatness isn’t defined by where you come from, but by how deeply you’re willing to give of yourself. Mam’ Nandi gave us everything," the statement read.
Following her passing, ordinary South Africans and industry mates have taken to social media to express their sorrow and celebrate her life.
Actress Zenande Mfenyane shared a personal memory of Mam’ Nandi Nyembe’s care and concern during her pregnancy.
"I remember during my pregnancy how she fondly held my hand and told me that I shouldn’t let just anyone stroke my belly. I feel like I personally failed you, Mam’Nandi, and I’m sorry I didn’t do more #RIPNandiNyembe"
Minister of Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie also paid tribute to Mam’ Nandi, describing her as one of South Africa’s most treasured icons of the arts.
"It is with profound sorrow that the Nyembe Family, together with the National Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, announce the passing of one of South Africa’s most treasured icons of the arts, Mam’ Nandi Nyembe".
Meanwhile, X user @MasizoleSukwana reflected on Mam’ Nandi Nyembe’s powerful performance in Yizo Yizo, recalling how they had recently rewatched the series and were struck by her portrayal of a character who stood firmly for justice and her community.
"I was watching Yizo-Yizo just two weeks ago on NFX. The way she nailed her role and how she fought for all those tenants, and how she stood for the truth within her community. It was wonderful to see how far she had come in her acting career. She was the best".
Another fan @ladyhuneybee also paid tribute to her enduring presence on South African screens.
"You ran your race with such grace and power. We grew up watching you light up our screens in so many telenovelas and shows — your presence was unforgettable. A true legend, a mother to many through your roles, and a pillar in our storytelling. #RIPNandiNyembe"
X user Ulrich Janse van Vuuren honoured her legacy as both an artist and cultural voice.
"Rest peacefully, Mme Nandi Nyembe. Actress, icon, and storyteller of our times. The industry owed you far more than it ever gave. Your voice and presence will be deeply missed. A heartbreaking loss for South Africa".
