This week’s celeb round-up: from Robert Redford's passing to Tyla's fashion nod

From Robert Redford’s death to Mariah Carey’s festival performance and Tyla’s fashion nod from Claudia Schiffer, it has been an eventful week in the entertainment world.

Stars passed, albums dropped, supercars changed hands, and icy celebrity feuds may have finally melted. Here’s a wrap of the biggest local and international moments.

1. Robert Redford dies, aged 89

Cinema icon Robert Redford passed away in his sleep at his Utah home on Tuesday, September 16, at the age of 89. 

Known for his roles in classics like “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” and “The Sting”, Redford also won an Oscar for directing “Ordinary People” and was honoured with a lifetime achievement award in 2002. 

He co-founded the Sundance Film Festival in 1985, supporting independent film-makers, while also being a committed environmental activist. Tributes from Hollywood industry peers have since been pouring in for the deceased icon.

2. Jojo Robinson parts with her McLaren 570S

Reality star Jojo Robinson announced she sold her yellow McLaren 570S after two years. Sharing the news on Instagram, she reflected on memories with the car and hinted at her next supercar purchase when she returns from Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Her top options are a Lamborghini Huracan or a Ferrari 488 GTB. Robinson, known for her love of fast cars, previously celebrated getting a new Ford Mustang GT in 2024.

3. Mariah Carey underwhelms at “The Town Festival 2025"

Mariah Carey closed “The Town Festival 2025” at São Paulo’s Interlagos Racetrack, performing hits and songs from her upcoming album “Here For It All”. 

Fans noted her high notes were on point, but many felt she appeared stiff and less present on stage. The festival also featured Jessie J, Ivete Sangalo and Natasha Bedingfield. 

Additionally, Carey’s comeback album, releasing September 26, will feature 11 songs with collaborations including Anderson.Paak, Kehlani, Shenseea and The Clark Sisters.

4. Nick Cannon opens up about fathering 12 children

Nick Cannon explained he fathered 12 children partly due to being “careless” after his divorce from Mariah Carey, which he did not heal from, labelling it as traumatic. 

Speaking on “The Breakfast Club”, he said he did not plan to have so many kids but embraced fatherhood as it came.

Cannon reflected that doing more personal work after his split might have changed things, but he insists all his children were born from love. He says he is currently “pressing hold” on adding more children, but is not opposed to it in the future.

5. Thapelo Mokoena dines with Beckham and Sharapova

Actor Thapelo Mokoena attended Stella Artois’ invitation-only “Let’s Do Dinner” in New York alongside David Beckham and Maria Sharapova.

He described the experience as inspiring, especially for his two football-loving sons. Mokoena noted Beckham’s down-to-earth personality and took a brief moment to meet former tennis player Sharapova, appreciating her praise for his outfit.

6. Relebogile Mabotja releases debut EP for 40th birthday

Relebogile Mabotja marked her 40th birthday with the release of her debut EP “Still Me”. The project, produced by Chadwin Alexander, features five tracks, including a collaboration with RJ Benjamin. 

Mabotja created the songs during lockdown in 2020 and described the release as a celebration of self-expression and a return to her first love, which is music. 

The EP blends jazzy and gospel sounds, focusing on self-discovery, love and letting go.

7. Bonang Matheba and Nomzamo Mbatha collaborate on an advertising campaign

Media personalities Bonang Matheba and Nomzamo Mbatha surprised fans by appearing together in a new McDonald’s advert. 

The collaboration has reignited speculation over whether the two stars have resolved their long-standing beef. 

While some believe it could signal reconciliation, others see it as a professional partnership for now. Fans have expressed excitement at the possibility of the two A-listers putting their past differences aside.

8. Cardi B announces star-studded features for ‘Am I The Drama?’

Rapper Cardi B revealed the feature list for her sophomore album, Am I The Drama?, which drops September 19. 

Collaborators include Tyla, Kehlani, Megan Thee Stallion, Selena Gomez, Janet Jackson, Summer Walker, Lizzo and Cash Cobain. 

Cardi B has been promoting the album creatively, including street pop-ups in New York. She previously won a civil case against former security guard Emani Ellis earlier this month.

9. Claudia Schiffer praises Tyla’s VMAs look

Tyla earned praise from supermodel Claudia Schiffer for wearing a 1993 Chanel piece on the 2025 MTV VMAs red carpet. Tyla styled the corset as a mini dress with black shorts and gold jewelry from Pandora. 

The 23-year-old singer, who won “Best Afrobeats Song” for Push 2 Start, received an Instagram shoutout from Schiffer, celebrating Tyla’s fashion sense and the throwback outfit.

10. Beyoncé and Jay-Z skip 2025 Emmys despite nominations

Beyoncé and Jay-Z were nominated at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards but did not attend. Beyoncé’s Netflix special “Beyoncé Bowl” and Jay-Z’s Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show were both up for awards. 

Beyoncé Bowl won a pre-announced Emmy for costume design, bringing her closer to EGOT status. 

Fans had hoped she would attend, but her absence was unsurprising, as the singer has never attended the Emmys despite the multiple nominations.
