Mzansi is in mourning as beloved South African television couple, Hungani and Stephanie Ndlovu, have announced their separation after six years of marriage.

The couple, known for their roles in the popular soapie Scandal!, have captured the hearts of fans with their endearing relationship, but they have decided to part ways.

According to a report from News24, the Ndlovus reached a settlement agreement, citing an "irreparable disintegration" of their relationship.

Their journey began with an intimate garden wedding on February 23, 2019, and they celebrated their fourth anniversary publicly in 2023, often being viewed as a poster couple in the entertainment industry.

The couple shares a three-year-old daughter, Rhulani, who recently celebrated her birthday in June.

Despite their public persona, the full reasons behind their breakup remain private, leading to a flurry of discussions about the pressures of fame and the evolving landscape of marriage in South Africa.

Fans have taken to social media platform,X, to express their thoughts on the couple's split.

User @picturessstudio shared a heartfelt message, stating, “Sometimes love evolves into something else. Wishing them both healing, growth, and peace in this next chapter. 💔✨”

Another user, @Chris_JNdonga, reflected on the challenges of modern relationships, saying, “Marriage isn’t for everyone, but our generation genuinely struggles to stay together. The notion that marriage in previous generations only worked because women put up with bad and unfaithful men is a reality, but not the only reality.”

User @GodPenuel added a thought-provoking perspective, suggesting that “people get married for the wrong reasons”,  advocating for a return to traditional values.

Meanwhile, @mdngwenya pointed out the impact of social media on modern marriages, stating, “Social media is also a huge factor in the failure of modern marriages. Exposure to too many opinions, places, lifestyles, etc., infects the mind with a constant desire for more … less content with what you have. Hard times.”

The divorce comes amid rising divorce rates in South Africa, with recently published data from Stats SA revealing that 22,230 divorces were finalised in 2023, a notable 10.1% increase from the 20,196 cases recorded in 2022.

The statistics indicate that a significant portion of divorces occur within the first decade of marriage, similar to the Ndlovus.

"In 2023, 42.0% of divorces involved couples whose unions lasted less than 10 years. This rising trend suggests that South Africans are increasingly willing to leave unhappy marriages rather than remain due to social pressures," noted Stats SA.

As the Ndlovus embark on their separate journeys, their story serves as a reminder of the complexities of love and the changing dynamics of relationships in contemporary society.
