If you love the Avatar universe and blockbuster cinema in general, there is some thrilling news to celebrate.

Avatar: Fire and Ash has officially crossed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office just weeks after its release in theatres on December 19, 2025.

This incredible milestone puts the third instalment in the Avatar saga in the elite group of global blockbusters and gives fans of the franchise and of James Cameron a huge reason to cheer.

The latest Avatar film has earned roughly $306 million in the United States and over $777 million internationally for a combined global total of about $1.08 billion so far.

That kind of performance shows the continued global appeal of the series more than 15 years after the first Avatar wowed audiences back in 2009.

With Avatar: Fire and Ash crossing one billion at the worldwide box office, Cameron now boasts four films that have reached that threshold.

This financial landmark also meant a special record for James Cameron himself.

With Avatar: Fire and Ash crossing one billion at the worldwide box office, Cameron now boasts four films that have reached that threshold.

That includes Titanic from 1997, the original Avatar from 2009, Avatar: The Way of Water from 2022, and now the latest Avatar instalment.

When you look back at Cameron’s career, it reads like a greatest hits list of cinema. Titanic made nearly $2.3 billion worldwide and set box office records for years.

The original Avatar remains one of the highest-grossing films of all time with around $2.9 billion in global sales, while Avatar: The Way of Water brought in more than $2.3 billion.

Both of those films didn’t just hit a billion, they almost doubled that mark.

Put together Cameron’s films have grossed more than $9 billion worldwide, making him the second-highest-grossing film director of all time in unadjusted box office totals.

That puts him just behind Steven Spielberg, whose movies have collectively grossed over $10.7 billion around the world and who holds the top spot on that list.

An interesting part of that comparison is just how prolific each director has been.

Spielberg has directed 37 feature films across his long career, from early hits like Jaws and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial to recent works like West Side Story and The Fabelmans.

Cameron’s filmography is much smaller by comparison with nine major theatrical films to his credit as a director, but the impact of those films has been huge.

Which of James Cameron’s movies stands as his most successful? In terms of worldwide box office, the original Avatar still holds the crown, with Avatar (2009) grossing the most overall.

But Titanic and Avatar: The Way of Water aren’t far behind and have each defined moments in box office history themselves.

For fans of the Avatar films and of Cameron’s work, this latest achievement is a celebration of storytelling and technological spectacle.

Crossing $1 billion is always a major benchmark for major theatrical releases, and Avatar: Fire and Ash did it in style just weeks after its debut.
