I always say this: if you really love music, you can’t be hanging out in one lane. One genre only? Nah, that’s just liking a genre, not loving music as a whole.
And recently, multi‑award‑winning rapper Cassper Nyovest reminded us of exactly that.
While promoting his latest collab, “Sondela”, with Khosie x Issue and MiCasa, he made a loud and proud call for fans to show love beyond just the big waves of Amapiano.
In a passionate video on his socials, Nyovest says, “Please don’t sleep on that song, don’t sleep on that song just like I told you guys not to sleep on ‘Aweh’ by the beautiful, talented Lordkez.”
“I’m telling you, don’t sleep on Khosie x Issue. This song is called ‘Sondela’, please go check it out, please go stream it.”
He’s pointing to the fact that trend‑dominated genres are cool, they’re popular, but they shouldn’t be the only thing we’re streaming.
He also didn’t shy away from naming what’s happening in the industry, yes, he acknowledged the dominance of Amapiano, both locally and internationally.
He said, “We are offering an alternative to everything that’s going on. Piano is the biggest, the most strongest, you know what I mean, but there’s a space for other sounds, other genres, other artists.
It’s about preserving the full spectrum, R&B, soul, kwaito, Afro‑pop, house, hip‑hop, jazz influences, because each genre brings a piece of our culture, our story, our feel.
It also comes shortly after Donald (Donald Moatshe) touched on the same subject, pointing out how fans must not default to one sound just because it’s dominating now.
Responding to the fan, the award-winning singer said, “Mara Tebza, I’m an artist and can’t be boxed.
"I make music with all kinds of sounds and languages. Enjoy what you enjoy, but don’t try to choose what I must make, because others want me to sing in Setwana, Zulu or even Sesotho. What about those people? Allow me to cook, you just eat what you like.”
If we just chase what’s hot, we risk missing the hidden gems, the deep cuts, the flips and turns that build a lifetime of love for music.
And here’s the thing, music isn’t just about the latest Amapiano banger or a trending sound you can dance to. It’s stories, it’s feelings, it’s the vibes that make you nod your head, tear up, or just sit back and listen properly, with intent.
Nyovest and Donald are showing us that you can’t cage creativity. They don’t owe anyone a formula, a beat, or a trend. They’re exploring, experimenting, and dropping sounds that represent all sides of who they are, and that’s where the magic happens.
So yes, stream the hits, go with the hype, but don’t sleep on the deep cuts, the soulful tracks, or the collabs that might not make the top charts but speak to your heart.
