Each piece, delicately handcrafted with the highest quality glass beads, tells a remarkable story of artistry, culture, and empowerment.
Robertson's journey began in the heart of rural Kwa-Zulu Natal. An early training stint as a product developer exposed her to the profound skills of women artisans in the area, sparking the idea for Zulu Mien.
"My journey began when I was invited to train as a product developer in rural Kwa-Zulu Natal, working alongside women artisans. This experience led me to develop Zulu Mien, focusing on supporting female artisans through sustainable jewelry production," the businesswoman said.
"It became apparent that these talented women needed a platform to showcase their skills while earning a fair wage," Robertson told Business Report.
Armed with a background in craft product development dating back to 2003 and a Master’s in Arts and Culture management, she was determined to bridge the gap between traditional craftsmanship and the modern market.
The road to establishing Zulu Mien, however, was fraught with challenges.
From selecting a sustainable production model to overcoming high transportation costs, Robertson said she faced significant hurdles in her quest to create an impactful business.
"Despite the difficulties, ensuring that our mission prioritises social responsibility over profits was essential.Together with my team of artisans, we remain committed to fostering self-sufficiency, recently initiating a rural-based silver jewelry manufacturing studio run independently by the craftswomen themselves," she said.
Today, Zulu Mien operates as a social enterprise dedicated to supporting female artisans. Robertson emphasises their commitment to ethical practices, stating, "While 'ethical' isn't explicitly in our name, our mission is deeply rooted in ethical principles."
Zulu Mien's foundation rests on fair compensation and sustainable practices, which are crucial for supporting the women in remote communities.
The company's vision is not just to create high-quality products but also to empower artisans through training and market access.

The company's 'slow-made' philosophy blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design, ensuring that each piece reflects the meticulous care imbued in its creation. Distribution has seen an update with the integration of an Amazon storefront.
"Managing time as a one-woman business owner with three children is challenging, but the assistance from my Amazon business account manager was invaluable," Robertson said.
As Zulu Mien continues to grow, Robertson's ambitions stretch to expanding the producer groups supported by the enterprise, however, it does come with some challenges.
"We continue to face challenges in keeping production costs low and expanding our market reach. We're working on training artisans in basic jewelry-making skills to increase self-sufficiency. We’ve also started a rural-based silver jewelry manufacturing studio, which the women will run independently," she said.
Creating a constant stream of orders, she aims to uphold both the artisans’ livelihoods and the traditional skills of beaded jewelry making.
In the hands of artisans like those at Zulu Mien, every piece of jewelry is not merely an accessory; it's a symbol of resilience, cultural pride, and sustainable development.
