In the heart of Delareyville, North West, a remarkable story unfolds. Botselo Mills, a family-run enterprise, is playing an essential role in fortifying South Africa’s food security.

Having begun its journey in 1982 by delivering maize to nearby farmers from a single bakkie, the business now stands as a formidable force in the national maize production arena, supplying more than 120 tons each month to over 1,176 Shoprite and Usave stores across the country.

The transformation of Botselo Mills has been astounding, with the company witnessing a revenue growth of more than 8,000% in just four years.

This meteoric rise can be traced back to a pivotal meeting in 2022 with the Shoprite Group, which recognised the mill’s potential to expand from a regional entity into a national supplier.

"They challenged us to supply on a national scale, and we were left with no option but to deliver," explained Fanie Schoeman, CEO of Botselo Mills.

The beginnings of Botselo Mills date back to a humble milling operation in a converted farm shed near Stella.

Originally trading as Batho Bothle, the business gradually evolved, relocating to Delareyville in 2008 and rebranding as Botselo Mills.

This transition was marked by significant investments in infrastructure, equipment, and packaging, all intended to create a national footprint.

"Our turning point came when we secured our first listing with the Shoprite Group," Schoeman said.

This alliance with Africa's largest grocery retailer has opened doors for nationwide distribution from Cape Town to Musina, enhancing the convenience of access to affordable, quality maize across the country.

Louis du Plessis, Deputy General Manager for Food Buying at the Shoprite Group, highlighted the mutual benefits of the partnership, "Botselo Mills was well positioned to grow beyond its regional base, and through our partnership, we’ve introduced the brand to more households across the country. It means our customers have greater access to affordable, quality maize, while we are simultaneously supporting local producers and contributing to the country’s economic growth."

The impact of Botselo Mills extends beyond its business achievements; it remains firmly rooted in the Delareyville community.

The company employs 563 individuals, the majority of whom reside in the surrounding area.

In just 15 years, its workforce has experienced a remarkable growth of nearly 300%, contributing to the development of the local economy.

This presence has spurred tangible changes in the region, including the establishment of a commercial bank branch and the opening of an on-site clinic that offers vital healthcare services.

Schoeman emphasised the firm's commitment to community well-being, "Our work is intertwined with the town’s wellbeing, what’s good for the community is good for us, and vice versa."

Botselo Mills actively supports local schools, crèches, churches, and care homes, reinforcing its dedication to societal responsibility.

Innovation and sustainability are at the forefront of Botselo Mills' operations.

The company has recently introduced a 2.5kg brick pack designed to replace traditional plastic bags, significantly enhancing packaging efficiency.

Soon to follow was a similar design for its Super White Instant 1kg product.

"Sustainability remains central to our operations, focusing on responsible local sourcing, eco-friendly packaging, and minimising environmental impact," stated Schoeman.

From its modest beginnings with second-hand equipment, Botselo Mills has ascended to become a national success story anchored in family values and community collaboration.

With the support of Shoprite, the company continues to expand its distribution, operations, and commitment to providing affordable staples for families across South Africa.
