In a move set to transform the financial landscape for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in South Africa, payments provider Ozow has announced a strategic partnership with the SME financial services platform Lula.

This collaboration aims to simplify and expand access to much-needed business funding for SMEs that are grappling with economic challenges in the current climate.

The partnership introduces a co-branded Ozow-Lula digital interface, allowing eligible businesses within Ozow’s merchant base to apply for funding with ease.

The process is designed to be efficient, as applications will be assessed and fulfilled by Lula, leveraging Ozow's extensive payments ecosystem to facilitate access.

Rachel Cowan, Ozow's interim CEO, said that the partnership is part of the company’s ongoing commitment to supporting merchants beyond traditional payment solutions.

“Our focus has always been on empowering businesses and giving them the tools to thrive in the digital economy. Through this partnership with Lula, we are extending that role by improving access to funding for our merchants through a channel they already use and trust,” Cowan stated.

South African SMEs are facing intensified pressure due to rising input costs, including fuel and electricity, alongside broad macroeconomic uncertainties.

For many, access to appropriate and timely funding remains a significant hurdle, particularly for those without extensive credit histories or conventional collateral.

This partnership is emblematic of an evolving fintech landscape where payment platforms are venturing beyond transactional roles, aiming to address the operational and financial necessities of businesses in a challenging economic environment.

Cowan noted that as the payments landscape evolves, fintech platforms are increasingly expected to provide integrated solutions that align with how businesses operate daily.

The collaboration offers Ozow merchants an avenue to access Lula's established funding solutions directly without the complications of navigating multiple platforms.

This integration is particularly designed to reduce friction in the funding process while enhancing visibility of relevant funding options for businesses actively participating in Ozow’s ecosystem.

Merchants will have the added benefit of seeing their potential funding eligibility dynamically on their Ozow Merchant Portal, streamlining the application process.

David Winter, SVP: Business Development at Lula, said that the partnership is consistent with Lula’s mission to expand funding access through embedded distribution channels.

“Lula’s approach has always been to meet businesses where they are. By partnering with Ozow, we are able to extend our reach to a large and active base of SMEs that are already participating in the digital economy,” Winter said.

The announcement arrives at a time when fintech partnerships are increasingly aimed at ecosystem expansion.

Companies are embedding complementary financial services into existing platforms to create more seamless user experiences that ultimately translate to enhanced value, whether through time savings, cost reductions, or improved interoperability.

The partnership with Lula marks a continuation of Ozow's strategy to bolster its merchant value proposition, following recent engagements that include enhancements in real-time payments and alternative payment methods.

Communication to inform merchants about the new funding channel is set to roll out shortly, alongside broader market engagement initiatives.

For those interested in learning more about the new funding access or submitting applications, Ozow merchants can find additional information on the Ozow Merchant Portal.
