Cola Turka gives the real thing a run for its money

Istanbul - Everyone is talking about the new Cola Turka, which was launched two weeks ago in the midst of Turkey's sizzling summer.

It has been an overnight success, with some suggesting that a diplomatic spat between Ankara and Washington over the arrest of Turkish soldiers has helped the new cola take on its better-known US rivals.

Cola Turka has gained a 25 percent market share in a country that consumes 1 billion litres of cola a year, with Coca-Cola holding the lion's share.

"We did not chose to take advantage of the political situation," said Eda Gokkan, who is in charge of the new drink's advertising campaign at Young and Rubicam.

"We're just trying to sell the Turkish lifestyle," she added.

"Because of the war in Iraq, 90 percent of Turks have turned against the US and many chose to buy local rather than US products," she said.

The Cola Turka launch coincided with an outbreak of nationalist sentiment, according to the sales manager of a supermarket in Istanbul, after the arrest by US forces of 11 Turkish soldiers in northern Iraq.

The soldiers, arrested on July 4, were released 60 hours later, but the episode was viewed as a national humiliation and it sparked a diplomatic row with Washington.

No official reason was given for the arrest, but US forces said that the Turkish soldiers were acting suspiciously and that explosives were found at their Sulaymaniyah headquarters.

Some newspapers have since highlighted instances of shopkeepers refusing to sell US products, including the more famous US colas.

Hurriyet newspaper, quoting a survey by the Roper ASW institute, said the sales of US products had fallen 13 percent in Turkey in the past few months.

A tongue-in-cheek television advert has also helped Cola Turka - which is sold by the Turkish Ulker food group - gain national attention.

It stars US comedian Chevy Chase and shows Americans in the US adopting Turkish customs as they drink the new cola, from throwing water after a departing car to ensure its smooth journey to growing bushy moustaches.
