As the World Health Organization forecasts a doubling in the population of those aged 60 and older by 2050, a remarkable transformation in the perception of ageing is taking root.

With advancements in medicine and lifestyle choices, seniors are shattering age-old stereotypes, ushering in a vibrant era where retirement evolves into an opportunity for rediscovery and passion.

"Modern retirement isn’t about slowing down and giving up what you love, but rather rediscovering passions, learning new skills, and building a fulfilling new chapter," said Barto van der Merwe, Managing Director of Renishaw Property Developments, a subsidiary of the JSE-listed Crookes Brothers Limited,.

In South Africa, particularly within coastal retirement villages, the trend indicates an increasing demand for communities that foster active living and well-being.

Van der Merwe identifies five impactful ways that retirees in KwaZulu-Natal are injecting youthfulness into their golden years:

  • Staying Physically Active - Exercise remains a cornerstone for maintaining vitality. Regular movement enhances circulation, builds strength, and mitigates chronic disease risks. Lifestyle retirement villages cater to this need with facilities for yoga, swimming, and nature trails, alongside preventative healthcare services that ensure residents remain in peak condition.
  • Stimulating the Mind - A sharp mind is essential to overall well-being, especially with age. Retirement estates facilitate continuous learning through community clubs and guest speaker events. Residents are encouraged to engage in discussions and activities, from crafting to digital skills, utilising the power of the internet to access online courses at their convenience.
  • Building Social Connections - Loneliness poses substantial health risks, but retirees are quelling this concern by cultivating friendships across generations. Engaging in various clubs and regular social gatherings helps create strong support networks, combating the isolation that often accompanies ageing.
  • Living with Purpose - For many retirees, the end of their careers can lead to a sense of disconnection. However, engaging in volunteer work, mentoring, or initiating community projects offers renewed purpose. The shared experiences within lifestyle retirement villages help forge bonds, making it easier for individuals to find their roles and contribute meaningfully.
  • Exploring and Rediscovering - Retirement is the perfect time to embark on abandoned bucket list adventures. By exploring new cultures and places, retirees can invigorate their spirit. Many retirement estates provide the freedom to travel without the burdens of home maintenance, allowing seniors to fully embrace new experiences.
