Food trucks have become a major force in the restaurant industry.

They are the perfect dining-out option for friends who want to have fun and socialise in a relaxed atmosphere.

Gone are the days when they merely offered pre-packaged sandwiches and subpar coffee to weary factory workers.

Today, food trucks are hotspots for gourmet experiences, featuring a variety of options, from freshly caught seafood to exquisite desserts.

Among their ranks, one particular mobile eatery has caught our attention - a Germany-based food truck that boasts a cheeky South African menu.

Listed on a popular German online catering service, Kostbar - South African Delights on Wheels -  invites patrons to immerse themselves in the culinary richness of South Africa.

The truck proclaims: “Immerse yourself in a culinary journey through South Africa with our unique food truck.”

With dishes inspired by the nation’s diverse cuisine, Kostbar aims to deliver not just meals, but an entire experience enveloped in warm hospitality and the vibrant spirit of Mzansi.

The menu features some standout items that marry the traditional with the playful:

The "Hot Springbok" dish.

  • Hot Springbok: A playful twist on the classic hot dog, these meatballs are served in bread boats, accompanied by salad, mushroom wedges, moon crackers, banana chips and a choice of lemon or mango curry sauce. The cheeky name pays homage to SA’s national animal, the Springbok and national rugby team.

Capturing the essence of the Mother City, this dish showcases tuna mixed with corn and South African spices, shaped into an XXL ball on crispy bread.

It’s complemented by a vibrant topping of cranberries, chickpeas, lettuce and cubes of pumpkin or mango, served alongside pea chips and a drizzle of both chilli and avocado lime sauces.

Paying tribute to the iconic former President Nelson Mandela, this dish consists of meatballs paired with mango wedges, moon crackers and creamy avocado.

Interestingly, a source from SA now residing in Germany revealed that none of the staff at Kostbar are South African or of African descent - they are all ethnic Germans.

One staff member's brief visit to Cape Town appears to be the sole connection to the cuisine they now serve.

Despite this, the menu’s creative naming conventions and offerings reflect a desire to engage with South African culture and excite the taste buds of its patrons.

As food enthusiasts sample these unique dishes, one can’t help but ponder: does this cheeky approach to South African cuisine whet the appetite or raise eyebrows?
