When you picture water shoes, high fashion isn't usually the first thing that springs to mind.

For years, they've been the unsung heroes of watersports enthusiasts and parents wrangling toddlers near slippery surfaces. Function over fashion was their mantra.

However, the fast-changing nature of fashion, much like the tides, has brought these utilitarian foot coverings into the style conversation.

According to recent articles in fashion publications like Harper's Bazaar and Vogue, designers have been subtly incorporating elements of practicality and comfort into their footwear collections.

Think chunky soles, breathable materials, and a move away from stilettos that threaten to sink into every patch of soft sand.

In this context, the humble water shoe, with its inherent grip and protective qualities, doesn't seem quite so… out there.

Here in South Africa, where our outdoor lifestyle often revolves around the beach, rock pools, and even the odd waterfall hike, the practicality of water shoes suddenly shines brighter than a Camps Bay sunset.

Forget that awkward hobble across hot sand or the frantic tiptoeing over sharp shells; these shoes are designed to handle it all.

Not your granny's aqua socks

The water shoes of today aren't necessarily the neon, sock-like contraptions of yesteryear. While those certainly still exist for the truly dedicated waterpeople, the contemporary versons boast sleeker designs, more muted colour palettes, and even trainer-inspired silhouettes.

Think breathable mesh uppers, durable rubber soles with impressive traction, and slip-on styles that won't look entirely out of place with your favourite board shorts or even a breezy summer dress.

Making waves on social media

Social media is also awash (pun intended) with South Africans embracing the trend. Influencers are showcasing how to style their water shoes for various summer activities, proving their versatility beyond just swimming.

From rock pooling with the kids to enjoying a sundowner at a beach bar without the fear of stubbing a toe, the humble water shoe is finding its place in our summer adventures.

So, are water shoes the new must-have for the South African summer?

Perhaps not in their most garish, throwback form. But as a practical, comfortable, and surprisingly on-trend option for navigating our stunning (and sometimes treacherous) beaches, they’re definitely making a splash.

Don't knock 'em 'til you rock 'em – your feet (and your sense of adventurous practicality) might just thank you for it.
