A brazen daylight shooting along the R603 near Adam’s Mission and Illovo, south of Durban, has left two men dead and a woman seriously injured. The shooting occurred on Monday afternoon just after 3pm.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said: “ALS Paramedics responded to numerous calls of a shooting incident on the R603 near Adam’s Mission and Illovo, south of Durban.”

Upon arrival, paramedics found that a family had come under fire after their vehicle broke down on the roadside. “It is alleged that a family vehicle had broken down and that the family was approached by gunmen who opened fire,” said Jamieson.

“The family attempted to flee whilst the gunmen continued shooting and following them,” he said.

Jamieson said they were first directed to a house just below the roadway. “Paramedics were shown to a house just below the roadway where they found a female in her forties who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to her lower legs. She was stabilised on the scene by ALS Paramedics and EMRS before being transported to a nearby hospital for the further care that she required.”

They were then taken to the front of the house, where they found a man in his twenties with fatal gunshot wounds. “He was declared deceased on the scene,” said Jamieson.

The team was then shown to the riverbank. “They found a male believed to be the father of the family. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his body and was also declared deceased on the scene.”

Reports suggest the gunmen opened fire while the family was still at their immobile car. The son jumped into a nearby property in an attempt to escape but succumbed to his injuries shortly after. The father was chased for several hundred metres and was shot dead next to a stream.

The woman, found closer to the vehicle, survived and remains in hospital.

The SAPS was on the scene and is investigating. The deceased father is reported to have been an induna from a nearby area.
