The flood victims in Durban could be placed in their new accommodation between December 2025 and January 2026.

Siboniso Duma, the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, made this revelation when he recently briefed the members of the provincial legislature on the work of his department.

The government recently acquired a building from Transnet that it intends to use as emergency accommodation for those displaced by disasters. About 200 people were recently moved from private accommodation in Durban following complaints by landlords regarding non-payment and unruly behaviour.

Duma highlighted the following key achievements regarding the resettlement of the victims of the 2022  and 2025 floods:

“We have closed the privately owned Temporary Transitional Emergency Accommodation in Msunduzi Local Municipality. We were joined by the Minister of Human Settlements, Thembi Simelane, when we handed over permanent houses to some of the 17 families who are now living comfortably in their new homes,” he said.

Duma added that processes to upgrade the newly acquired Montclair Lodge will start soon.

“We are now busy with the procurement of a service provider that will commence the refurbishment of the lodge. We will ensure that 200 families will be accommodated by December 2025 and January 2026. This is in anticipation of heavy rainfall associated with the summer season.”
