A Grade 12 pupil from a Dulati Combined School in the rural community of Magqagqeni, near Umzimkhulu in KwaZulu-Natal has secured a Siemens Energy Engineering bursary valued at approximately R1.5 million to his tertiary studies.

Azola Sihlahla was awarded the bursary at the 45th Eskom Expo International Science Fair (ISF) last week based on his project presented at the fair.

He will be able to study a Bachelor of Science in Engineering at any South African university of his choice.

Speaking about the bursary award, Sihlahla said: “Coming from a humble background has taught me to make the most of every opportunity. I’m passionate about learning, especially languages, and enjoy experimenting with electronics.”

Sihlahla’s first introduction to the Eskom Expo came in 2022 when his Physical Science teacher, Mr. Magoboti, encouraged him to develop an idea, build a model, and participate in the competition.

Although he did not make it to the ISF initially, Sihlahla persisted. “I’ve learned to be resilient. It was a long journey, but I’m thrilled to have made it this year,” he said.

The Eskom Expo ISF, held at Emperors Palace in Kempton Park, brought together South Africa’s brightest young scientists and international delegations, celebrating innovation and the transformative power of education.

In addition to the Siemens Energy bursary, Sihlahla received a Highly Commended certificate and was one of eight recipients of the Durban University of Technology’s Young Innovator Award, which included a tablet and entry into a 12-month mentorship and incubation programme valued at R15 000.

“Winning awards at the ISF was a dream come true,” Sihlahla said. “I loved visiting the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre and the Wits Anglo-American Digital Dome. Seeing learners from different regions and backgrounds come together to learn and share knowledge was truly inspiring.”

Sihlahla also thanked his mentor.

“I’d like to thank Mr. Magoboti for planting the seed of science in me and supporting me throughout this journey.”

He encouraged other aspiring participants to persevere: “Believe in yourself, follow your mentors’ guidance, manage your time well, and don’t give up on your dreams.”
