The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) has in the past week arrested 165 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol, in a major crackdown on this dangerous scourge.
The JMPD said the arrests came as a result of proactive operations, including roadblocks, intensified visible policing and responses to public complaints.
It said the highest number of arrests took place in the Johannesburg inner city region.
“The JMPD will not tolerate drunk driving. Our officers are working tirelessly to remove intoxicated drivers from our roads,” said JMPD chief Patrick Jaca.
“The high number of arrests in the Inner City reflects our focused efforts in this area and serves as a stark reminder that we are serious about enforcing the law.
“We are sending a clear message, if you drink and drive in Johannesburg, you will be arrested," Jaca added.
The JMPD says those caught driving under the influence of alcohol would face severe legal penalties, including licence suspension and potential imprisonment.
However, much work still needs to be done by South African prosecutors, given that the current rate for successful drunk driving prosecutions is believed to be just 7%, according to South Africans Against Drunk Driving (SADD).
According to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), at least 27% of road fatalities can be linked to alcohol consumption, although estimates vary.

“Alcohol impairs judgment, reaction time, and coordination, significantly increasing the likelihood of causing or being involved in an accident. Drunk driving accidents often result in devastating injuries and loss of life,” the JPMD added.
