It doesn’t seem that long ago that we were writing about the 992 Turbo S. We were also fortunate enough to drive that model at the SA national ride-and-drive event (read about our experience at this link). It has been a few years since, and the Porsche 911 Turbo S 992.2 generation has just been shown.

The 992.2 Turbo S will be shown to the public at the upcoming IAA Mobility show in Germany.

The biggest news for the introduction of the Porsche 911 Turbo S 992.2 generation is the upgraded powertrain. Power is up by 45kW on the twin-turbocharged flat-six. As a result power rises to 523kW. This makes the new 911 Turbo S the most powerful production 911 to date. Peak torque is 800Nm.

The major difference to the engine that it replaces is the adoption of twin electric turbochargers (eTurbo). The two eTurbos contribute to an increase in power and responsiveness. The two units are powered by a high-voltage battery with a capacity of 1,9 kWh, which is the same as the one used in the 911 Carrera GTS.

The 911 Turbo S is priced from R5,558,000 (Coupe) and R5,827,000 (Cabriolet).

An eight-speed PDK sends power to the standard all-wheel drive system. As a result, the Turbo S Coupé can blast from 0-100 km/h in 2.5 seconds, 0.2 seconds better than its predecessor. 0-200km/h takes 8.4 seconds, an improvement of 0.5 seconds. The top speed is 8 km/h slower at 322km/h.

The Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) system is standard fitment. In addition to having the most power of any production 911 ever, it also has the largest PCCB system that Porsche has ever installed in a two-door model. The front brake discs are 420mm in diameter, while the rear rotors grow to 410mm. The brakes are housed within 20-inch front and 21-inch rear rims. The alloys are available in a number of model-specific designs that have a centre-locking feature.

Different Appearance

The 911 Turbo also boasts a wider body than on the current 911 Carrera versions. The rear fenders also feature intakes that channel air to the engine. There are new vents on the front of the car as well. Oval shaped titanium exhaust openings are available as an option.

The range-leader of the 911 ranges has a number of design cues to set it apart. Numerous elements are designed in Turbonite, a colour reserved for Turbo variants. These include the Porsche crest and the “turbo S” lettering at the rear. In addition, there are Turbonite accents in the slats of the engine grille and around the windows.

The Turbonite accents continue into the cabin. These include the door cards, steering wheel, dashboard and centre console surrounds. The instrument cluster, and Sport Chrono stopwatch get the same treatment. Carbon-fibre trim inserts with integrated Neodyme accents are employed along with a perforated black Race-Tex headliner.
