At 1,360hp (1,000kW), with a maximum speed of 220mph (360km/h) the Mercedes-AMG GT XX is more powerful than the €2.5m limited edition AMG One and will be the first car built on Mercedes’ new electric sports car platform.

While it is unlikely to go into mass production, it features a range of technologies that will feature in road cars in the near future.

Mercedes new electric CLA goes on sale this summer at a price of around €50,000, far more than Chinese competitors, and will test the strategy of going more upmarket in the battle for buyers.

The momentum behind EV sales in Europe has dropped amid mixed messages from governments and industry, leaving the market wide open for Chinese manufacturers.

Styling is inspired by the brand's competition cars.
